What IS possible in Amsterdam during the lockdown?!
On 18 December 2021, a new lockdown has been announced in the Netherlands. Bummer! Fortunately, Amsterdam is such a great city: there is always something (safe) to do here. And that includes during this lockdown. We've put together a list of activities you can still do during the lockdown. Read on to ensure you have a memorable winter.
Amsterdam Light Festival
One of the advantages of visiting Amsterdam in winter is the chance to see the beautiful Amsterdam Light Festival. During this winter festival, Amsterdam is transformed into one giant spectacle. The city's canals and streets are illuminated with enchanting light installations by international artists. The festival started in 2012 and has become a much-loved event ever since. The Amsterdam Light Festival attracts nearly a million visitors each year, who come to see Amsterdam's open-air exhibition in December and January.
Each year the exhibition differs in theme and size, making each edition unique. This time, the 10th edition will make the festival all about 'celebrating'. The public has had a say and has voted for their favourite works of light art. Six public favourites will be part of a total of twenty artworks. This edition will also include highlights from the past nine years of the Amsterdam Light Festival.
Unfortunately, this edition will be smaller than previous years due to the current COVID-19 measures. However, it will still be possible to see this open-air art gallery while walking through the centre of Amsterdam, every day from 17:00 to 22:00. You can buy a map here to make sure you see all the beautiful works of art! The current measures are carefully monitored and enforced to ensure the safety of visitors. The Amsterdam Light Festival is certainly a magical experience and will make getting through the lockdown a lot more enjoyable!
Cycling through Amsterdam
What could be more fun (and healthier) than discovering Amsterdam by bike? With one of the rental bikes from the Van der Valk hotel Amsterdam-Amstel you can discover Amsterdam the Dutch way. During the lockdown period, it is of course important to keep working on your health. With a bicycle tour through the capital, you are healthy and can enjoy the most beautiful sights. Cycle through the city centre past the Rijksmuseum or discover one of the oldest functioning windmills in Amsterdam; the Gemeenschapsmolen. Our Front Office staff will be happy to help you map out the most beautiful, distant or special cycling route. With a nice thick winter jacket, a scarf, hat and a pair of mittens, you're all set to take off on your bike during the winter in Amsterdam!
Walking in Amsterdam
Walking in Amsterdam is a real experience. Amsterdam is home to some of the most beautiful parks that invite you to take a lovely walk, even during the lockdown. Walking has many health benefits, but it's also a lot of fun! Take a lovely stroll along the Amstel River or explore the famous VondelPark further afield. Don't forget to grab a delicious hot chocolate on the way.
A warm bath
There's nothing like unwinding after a day exploring the magic of Amsterdam. As the icing on the cake, enjoy a lovely bath in your own hotel room. Book one of our rooms with a lovely bath here.
